Tihana Valent

“Memory is the cabinet of the imagination, the treasury of reason, the registry of conscience, and, the council chamber of thought.”
Giambattista Basile

Tihana’s work is mostly of personal character flowing around themes of memory, time, construction and deconstruction, and relationships within her immediate surroundings. Even though the themes are personal they can end up stretching into the wider questions of cultural and social issues.

With her work she tries to comment on situations closest to her, making a connecting line between past and present. On one side exploring the timeline of a moment, while on the other, seeking for the emotion of a moment that can describe a longer time period.

While her expression of these subjects can be mainly described as installation work, inside of that frame she uses various media and materials – video, drawing, plaster, found objects, wool, plexiglass, paper, photography. In this variety she finds space for continuous discovery.

Biography

Tihana was born in 1979 in Zagreb in Croatia. From 1995 – 2000 she was a member of an experimental theater group Theatre de femmes, that under the leadership of Anica Tomic, together with few other groups, marked the independent alternative scene of post war Zagreb.

In 2000 Tihana moved to Prague where she collaborated with number of theater groups, concentrating on non-verbal movement expression. With this work she slowly shifted her interest towards fine art, starting to experimenting with video and installation art. She holds a BA (Hons) Fine Art Experimental Media degree from Prague College/Teesside University in Prague.

Presently Tihana is collaborating on theater projects with LAVU and working independently on her own projects, recently discovering expression in sewing and photography.
